Bali has not lost its pull, but the logistics have changed. New digital entry forms, a tourism levy, and stricter enforcement on everything from scooter licenses to temple dress codes mean you cannot just show up and wing it anymore.

This guide covers what actually matters for a 2026 trip: the paperwork, the transport, the cultural expectations, and the practical stuff that keeps your holiday from going sideways.

2026 pre-arrival checklist

Requirement	Details and fees	What to do
All Indonesia Arrival Card	Replaces the old paper forms. Combines customs, health, and immigration into one digital submission.	Complete online at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id within 72 hours before arrival.
Bali Tourism Levy	IDR 150,000 (~$10 USD) per person. Funds cultural preservation and environmental projects.	Pay in advance via the official Love Bali portal to get your entry QR code before landing.
Tourist Visa (e-VOA)	B1 Visa, 30 days, extendable once for another 30 days. Cost: IDR 500,000.	Apply at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Doing this online saves you the 45 minute queue at immigration.
Passport and onward travel	Minimum 6 months validity from entry date. Airlines check for a confirmed return or onward ticket.	Check your passport for damage too. Creased or water damaged passports get rejected at check in.

1. Getting around legally: the scooter crackdown

Renting a scooter is still the cheapest way to get around, and the best way to find the beaches and warungs that do not appear on Google Maps. But the enforcement has caught up.

You need a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) with motorcycle endorsement (Category A) in addition to your home license. Police set up checkpoints on main roads, especially around Canggu and Seminyak. If they stop you without an IDP, expect a fine. Worse, riding without one may invalidate accident or medical coverage depending on your policy exclusions. Check your travel insurance terms before renting a scooter, especially if you are relying on it for hospital care at a place like BIMC.

If the traffic feels like too much (and honestly, Denpasar rush hour is chaotic even by Southeast Asian standards), booking a private car charter through BaliBlissed gets you a local driver who knows the shortcuts and a clean air conditioned car for the day.

2. Staying connected: eSIMs are the move now

You can still buy a physical SIM at the airport, but eSIMs have made the process simpler. Buy one before you fly, activate it when you land, and you have data immediately without hunting for a Telkomsel booth.

One thing to know: if you plan to use a local Indonesian SIM, whether physical or eSIM, the phone needs IMEI registration at customs. Roaming on your home carrier's plan (or buying a roaming eSIM before you fly) bypasses this entirely. If you register a local SIM through a provider like Telkomsel, the exemption covers stays up to 90 days. Stays longer than that require the formal IMEI process at the airport customs office. BaliBlissed lists vetted eSIM packages if you want to compare options before buying.

3. Language: when to get a guide

Most Balinese people in tourist areas speak functional English, and you will get by fine at restaurants, hotels, and surf shops. Learning a few phrases helps, though. "Terima kasih" (thank you) and "Tolong" (please) go a long way.

Where a guide actually becomes worth the cost is cultural sites, rice terrace treks, and anything off the beaten path. Trying to navigate a ceremony at a village temple without context, or finding a specific waterfall trailhead from conflicting Google Maps pins, is where language gaps become real problems. BaliBlissed pairs you with English speaking local guides for these kinds of trips.

4. Packing for the climate (and the coral)

The weather is warm year round, so pack light: linen, cotton, swimwear, a hat, decent sunglasses. You will want one pair of proper shoes for temple stairs and waterfall treks, not just flip-flops.

The less obvious one: reef safe sunscreen. Bali's coral reefs are under serious pressure, and oxybenzone based sunscreens accelerate bleaching. Several dive and snorkel operators now check what you are wearing before letting you in the water. Bring a reusable water bottle too. Single use plastic is a visible problem here, and most cafes will refill for free.

5. Booking ahead vs. winging it

Walk up pricing in Bali is inconsistent. Sometimes you get a deal. More often, you pay a "tourist premium" that a bit of planning would have avoided. Popular activities like sunrise treks at Mount Batur or organized rice terrace tours sell out during peak season, and last minute availability usually means inferior time slots.

Planning your major excursions through BaliBlissed before arrival locks in rates and guarantees availability. You still get plenty of spontaneity for wandering Ubud markets or stumbling into a beach bar, but the big ticket items are sorted.

6. Temple etiquette and the tourist code of conduct

The provincial government enforces a formal Tourist Code of Conduct, and they mean it. Penalties for violations include fines and, in extreme cases, deportation.

The basics: cover your shoulders and knees at any temple or ceremonial site. Men and women both need a sarong and sash (most temples rent these at the entrance for a few thousand rupiah). Do not climb on sacred structures. Do not pose inappropriately near offerings or shrines. Do not enter a temple if you are visibly intoxicated. These are not suggestions. Tourists have been escorted out of the country for Instagram stunts at holy sites.

7. Waterfall treks require actual fitness

The waterfalls in North and Central Bali (Sekumpul, Nungnung, Aling-Aling) are worth the effort, but "effort" is literal. Sekumpul involves roughly 300 steep steps down a jungle canyon, in humidity that makes your phone fog up. Then you climb back out.

Wear shoes with good grip. Bring a waterproof bag for your camera and phone, because the mist near the falls soaks everything. Carry water. The climb back up is where people underestimate things.

8. The Ubud Monkey Forest: protect your stuff

The Sacred Monkey Forest in Ubud is worth visiting (the temples inside are centuries old), but the long tailed macaques are professional thieves. They grab sunglasses off faces, phones out of back pockets, and water bottles from side pouches.

Before you go in: put everything in a zipped bag. No dangling jewelry, no loose items, no snacks. If a monkey grabs something, do not pull back. They bite, and a monkey bite in a tropical country means a hospital visit and rabies shots. Let it go, and a sanctuary worker will usually retrieve it for you.

9. Canggu: surf, eat, sit in traffic

Canggu is where most first time visitors under 40 end up. Batu Bolong has forgiving waves for beginners, the cafe scene is solid, and the beach clubs deliver.

The downside: traffic. The roads were not built for the number of people now living and visiting here. Between 4pm and 7pm, the main drag (Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong) can take 30 minutes to travel 2km. Plan your days around this. Stay in one neighborhood per half day, or use a driver who knows the back routes.

10. Eating well without getting sick

Indonesian food is worth exploring seriously. Nasi Goreng (fried rice with a fried egg on top) and Babi Guling (slow roasted pork with local spices, a Balinese specialty) are the standards, but the variety goes much deeper once you start eating at local warungs.

The "Bali Belly" problem is real but avoidable. Drink bottled or filtered water only. Be cautious with ice at small street stalls (established restaurants use filtered ice, which is cylindrical with a hole in the middle). Eat at busy places where turnover is high. If a warung has a line of locals, the food is fresh.
